Twenty-two persons were killed on Sunday after the boat in which they went on a pleasant trip capsized in Pulicat Lake, about 60 km from Chennai, southern India, local media reported.

About 25 persons were in the boat and at least three of them had been rescued by fishermen, said the report.

Initial reports said the victims hailed from different places in and around Chennai and the boat was reportedly operated by local fishermen, said Press Trust of India.

Some of the bodies had been recovered by rescue teams, said the reports.

The incident took place at an estuary at the converging point with the Bay of Bengal at around 15:30 p.m. local time, when the boat met with high wind and storm.
