China welcomes the signing of a non-aggression and cooperation agreement between Sudan and South Sudan, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Monday.
Spokesman Liu Weimin said during a regular press conference that China hopes the two sides will comply with the agreement and properly resolve other pending issues through negotiations as early as possible.
As neighboring countries, Sudan and South Sudan must coexist peacefully in order to achieve common development, Liu said, adding that their peace will also be conducive to maintaining regional peace and stability.
Sudan and South Sudan signed the pact last Friday under the mediation of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
