The resignation of Kevin Rudd as Australia's foreign minister is the country's internal affair, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Thursday at a regular press briefing.

Hong made the statement in response to a media request for China's comment on Rudd's resignation and whether China would welcome him as Australia's prime minister again.

Hong said the China-Australia relationship has maintained positive development momentum. "On the occasion of the 40-year anniversary of the two countries' diplomatic ties, China is ready to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Australia so as to further promote the two countries' relations."
