Prosecutors on Thursday filed three juvenile counts of aggravated murder charges against 17-year- old Thomas Lane, the accused gunman in Monday's school shooting in Chardon, the U.S. state of Ohio, which killed three pupils and wounded two others.

Geauga County prosecutor David Joyce announced the charges against Lane. Lane also faces two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of felonious assault.

The juvenile charges mean Lane could only get a few years in detention if convicted. But Joyce has said he plans to try Lane as an adult, meaning life in prison if the latter is found guilty. Lane has already confessed to the shooting.

The shooting took place on Monday morning in Chardon High School. Three days after the tragedy, a unified Chardon High student body gathered with parents in Chardon Square before beginning their journey to the school.

With classes starting on Friday, the students did not have to go back to school on Thursday. Most did so, however, as a way to take another giant step in the healing process, local media reported.

Grief counselors were waiting at the high school for the children and their parents. The school opened its doors at 10 a.m..
