Islamist parties would grab over 60 percent of the vote in Algeria's parliamentary elections slated for May 10, according to a poll conducted by a local newspaper.

According to the partial results published by Echorouk on Saturday, the five Islamist parties would win a landslide victory with 62 percent of the vote in the May polls, while the National Liberation Front (FLN), currently the largest party in parliament, would drop to third place.

The second largest party, the National Democratic Rally (RND) headed by Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, would end up in ninth place.

Respondents were given 10 options in answering the following question: "On which party would you vote in the parliamentary election?"

Twenty-nine percent of those polled said they would vote for the Islamist alliance of the Green Algeria made up of three Islamist parties, while 22.8 percent said they favor the Islamist Front for Change, led by former Minister of Industry Abdelmadjid Menasra.

The Islamist Front for Justice and Development (FJD), led by Saad Abdellah Djabellah, gained 10.61 percent of support, while the FLN came third with 11.65 percent.

However, 7.5 percent of the respondents said they would vote for the oldest opposition party in Algeria, the Socialist Forces Front (FFS), which has a strong presence in the Kabylie region.

As for independent candidates, only 4 percent said they would vote for them. The poll is still ongoing on and the final results will be released next week.
