Syrian interior ministry said Friday that the suicide bombing that rattled a Damascus neighborhood claimed the lives of 11 people and left 26 others injured.

The blast occurred in al-Midan neighborhood when the bomber detonated himself near a mosque, the ministry said in a statement carried by state-run SANA news agency.

Footage aired by the state TV showed people running in panic and pieces of bodies littered on the ground at the blast site. Stains of blood were also seen at the spot while a passerby was shouting "Is this the freedom they want?"

Also, unidentified gunmen opened fire on people who gathered at the scene after the explosion, the report said.

The area has been cordoned off by security authorities and forensic experts have come to the scene to collect evidences.

Al-Midan area was hit by a deadly explosion on Jan. 6. The explosion ripped through a busy intersection in the neighborhood, killing at least 25 people and wounding 46 others.

A number of explosions rocked Syria on Friday despite the presence of the advance team of UN observers in the country, which has been gripped by a yearlong unrest that the government blames on foreign conspiracy and armed groups.
