At least 26 people were killed and 27 others injured in a major road mishap on Mumbai-Pune highway in the western Indian state of Maharashtra Sunday midnight, a senior police official said Monday.

''The mishap happened when a speeding tempo rammed into a stationary bus at Khalapur on the highway. Most of the victims were tempo passengers. While 26 people were killed on the spot, the injured have been rushed to a local hospital by locals,'' he said.

Four minors were among those killed in the mishap, the official said, adding that most of the victims were part of a marriage party.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.
