A motorbike suicide bombing rocked Kandahar 450 km south of capital Kabul killing 22 people, including the attacker and wounding 22 others, provincial police chief Abdul Razeq said.
"It was a motorbike suicide attack carried out on the road leading to Kandahar airport this morning, killing 21 people and injuring 22 others, all civilians," Razeq told Xinhua.
The attacker was also killed in the blast, he added.
The road leading to Kandahar airport is a crowded route used by both NATO-led forces and civilian vehicles including cars and buses.
Kandahar airport is also home to thousands of NATO-led forces supporting Afghan security forces to ensure security in the southern region.
Militancy has been on constant rise since launching Taliban spring offensive on May 3 this year.
