The South China Sea issue should be resolved by directly concerned parties, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Monday.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Hong said the South China Sea issue consists of disputes between nations concerned about the sovereignty of the Nansha islands and the demarcation of the islands' adjacent waters.
"The issue should be resolved through friendly negotiations, which is regulated by the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea in 2002," he added.
"Countries outside the South China Sea should respect the choice of the relevant parties, hold an impartial position on the issue and make more efforts in favor of regional peace and stability instead of bringing harmful effects," he said.
