New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the city's subway will begin limited service on Thursday.
At a press conference, he also said that limited commuter rail service on the Long Island Rail Road and the Metro-North railroad will resume at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Many tunnels that carry trains were flooded by the superstorm Sandy, which represents the worst natural disaster in the transit system's 108-year history.
Meanwhile, Cuomo called for patience and tolerance because of the current traffic conditions.
Though bus service in New York has already been restored, traffic was slow because of heavy traffic and passengers could be seen queuing up in long lines.
