The United States will sell Israel munitions to renew its inventory in the wake of a recent offensive in the Gaza Strip, local media outlets reported Tuesday.
The U.S. Department of Defense on Monday notified Congress of the 647 million U.S. dollar deal to provide the Israel Air Force ( IAF) with precision munitions depleted during the "Operation Pillar of Defense" in Gaza last month.
The IAF reportedly used up much of its high-precision munitions in more than a thousand bombing sorties against Hamas rocket- launching crews, weapons caches and other assets of militant groups operating in the coastal enclave, in order to minimize civilian casualties and collateral damage.
The U.S. Department of Defense said the deal includes the supply of some 7,000 Joint Attack Munitions kits, which convert " dumb" bombs into satellite-guided "smart" munitions, as well as an equal number of BLU-109 and GBU-39 bunker-buster bombs, the Ha' aretz daily said on its website.
It was not clear whether bunker-buster bombs, intended for striking heavily-fortified underground targets, were used during the eight-day campaign to halt incessant rocket fire toward Israel.
