Philippine death toll from Haiyan approaching 4,000

The number of people killed by typhoon Haiyan, or Yolanda, in central Philippines has climbed to 3,974 as of Sunday noon, a military official said Sunday.

In addition, 1,186 people remained missing and 12,544 were injured, the country's Defense administrator Eduardo del Rosario told media after a meeting of the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The meeting, presided over by Executive Secretary Pacquito Ochoa and NDRRMC chairman Defense secretary Voltaire Gazmin, discussed issues involving the relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The military assured that measures are in place to ensure the security for the flow of fuel supplies.
