While the media tycoon and his third wife were filing for divorce, Blair was widely reported of having an affair with Wendi Deng.

But both Blair and his wife Cherie reportedly expressed their anger and confusion at what they saw as unfounded slurs.

Blair's spokesman told the Hollywood Reporter, "If you are asking if they are having an affair, the answer is no."

According to Dailymail Blair met with Deng on a number of occasions without Murdoch's knowledge.

Staff at Mr Murdoch's Californian cattle ranch claimed Mr Blair and Miss Deng twice stayed overnight on the same weekends in October 2012 and April this year.

They also stayed overnight at Murdoch's home in Los Angeles and met in London and New York, the Mail on Sunday said.

Murdoch's media empire played a crucial role in three Labour election victories, keeping Blair in office from 1997 to 2007.

Blair became a Murdoch family friend and godfather to the couple's daughter Grace in 2010.
