Malaysia Airlines said it has learnt the allegations made against the co-pilot on the missing plane, Fariq Ab Hamid, saying it was shocked by these allegations.

"We have not been able to confirm the validity of the pictures and videos of the alleged incident, said the airline in a statement. "As you are aware, we are in the midst of a crisis, and we do not want our attention to be diverted."

"We also urge the media and general public to respect the privacy of the families of our colleagues and passengers," said the statement. "It has been a difficult time for them."

Malaysia Airlines said it attaches importance to the welfare of both its crew and passenger's families, adding that the security and safety of passengers is of the utmost importance.

An Australian television earlier reported that the co-pilot on the missing plane, Fariq Ab Hamid, had invited two women into the cockpit during a flight two years ago.

One of the women, Jonti Roos, said she and her friend were allowed to stay in the cockpit during the one-hour flight from Phuket to Kuala Lumpur. She said the arrangement did not seem unusual to the plane's crew.

"Throughout the entire flight, they were talking to us and they were actually smoking throughout the flight," Roos said.
