Hundreds of demonstrators staged a mass kiss-in at a Sainsbury's store in Brighton in protest at the treatment of a lesbian couple who were asked to leave unless they stopped kissing.
Students joined LGBT campaigners and local residents in the aisles of the store on New England Street yesterday evening.
The protest, dubbed the Big Kiss-In, was held after a security guard threatened to remove a lesbian couple for kissing after a customer complained it was “disgusting” and said she “feared for her child's safety.”
It was organised by the University of Sussex Students' Union, who called for Sainsbury's to make a public apology and for staff to undertake mandatory training on Equality and Diversity issues.
Kiss-In organiser, Michael Segalov, the communications officer at the Students' Union, said the event was “an incredible success.”
