Two Afghan army soldiers and eight militants have been killed within the last 24 hours, said the country's Defense Ministry on Wednesday morning. "Over the past 24 hours, eight Taliban militants were killed and six others detained following army operations in six provinces out of the 34 Afghan provinces," the ministry said in a statement.
Two army soldiers lost their lives in a roadside bomb attack, the statement said.
The army specialists also found and defused 31 roadside bombs and landmines recently planted by militants across the country over the same period, according to the statement.
The U.S. forces and NATO-led troops will switch from combat to support role -- NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) mission -- which will focus on training, advising and assisting Afghan forces by the end of this month.
On Jan. 1, 2015, the new NATO mission begins in Afghanistan and nearly 13,000 foreign forces will be involved in RS mission, according to NATO officials.
