China is always sincere about improving relations with Vatican, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said Monday.
Qin made the remarks at a daily press briefing after Pope Francis denied a private audience to the Dalai Lama. Media reports said the request was declined "for obvious reasons concerning the delicate situation" with China.
Qin said China has "noticed" the Holy See's attitude.
"China will continue to hold constructive dialogue with the Holy See," Qin said, adding that "we hope Vatican will make joint efforts with China so that the two sides can meet each other halfway to improve bilateral relations."
