China's Ministry of National Defense has rebuked Japanese media over statements about Chinese moves on the Nanji Islands, saying the reporting is an attempt to sensationalize regional tension.

China's National Defense Ministry Spokesperson Yang Yujun said:

"It's beyond any criticism and doubt when China carries out any activities and constructions on its own territory. Some media in Japan make irresponsible speculations about China's legitimate activities and construction and play up tensions in the region. It is pure media hype."

China's decision to build a military base on the Nanji Islands came out in a report from Japan's Kyodo News, which says the move is to strengthen surveillance over the air defense identification zone in the East China Sea.

The Nanji islands are 300 km away from the disputed Diaoyu islands.
