Chinese-Canadian politician Jenny Kwan was sworn in as a member of Canada’s House of Commons recently, according to Canada-based media the Global Chinese Press.
The Hong Kong-born veteran politician was elected in October to represent Vancouver East in Canadian Parliament.
Kwan, born in 1967, immigrated to Canada at age nine. She became the youngest city councilor elected in Vancouver’s history in 1993 and was elected in 1996 as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Vancouver—Mount Pleasant, becoming one of the first Chinese-Canadians to sit in the Legislative Assembly, according to her profile on the website of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP).
The MP said she was elected thanks to long-standing effort of the Chinese community in Canada in winning the right of election, according to the Canadian newspaper.
She was appointed as her party's critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship in November.
