The Sudanese army has recaptured a strategic area in Blue Nile State which is witnessing military clashes between Sudanese army and fighters of the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM)/northern sector, Sudan's Ashorooq net reported Thursday.

"The army has managed to liberate Jebel Kalgo area from the elements of the SPLM/northern sector," Blue Nile State Governor Hussein Yassin was quoted as saying.

Ashorooq further quoted military sources to have said that the Sudanese army fought a fierce battle on several fronts on the road to the strategic Jebel Kalgo area, some 30 km south of Damazin, capital city of Blue Nile state.

The rebels have left behind a number of their members killed and others injured, while the Sudanese armed forces have arrested around one hundred rebels, according to the report.

The sources further reiterated the importance of Jebel Kalgo as a strategic area to cut the supplies from the rebels.

Earlier, the SPLM/northern sector disclosed that fierce battles took place between its troops and the Sudanese army at strategic areas in Blue Nile State.

Jebel Kalgo lies some 30 km south of Damazin and constitutes a strategic area for the forces of the rebels group.

The Blue Nile state has been witnessing armed clashes between the Sudanese army and the rebels since 2011. The state enjoys a strategic geographical location, and is rich of natural resources. It is also home to Al-Rusaires, the biggest electricity producing Dam in Sudan.
