The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced that an inter-agency humanitarian convoy is delivering humanitarian assistance on Tuesday for 35,000 people in Al Waer in the Homs area in western Syria, a UN spokesman told reporters here.

"It is comprised of food, health, nutrition and non-food items," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said at a daily news briefing here. "This is the first such inter-agency convoy to deliver life-saving assistance this month to any besieged or hard-to reach area in Syria."

A second convoy is planned for later this week, he said.

In the northeastern city of Hasakeh, the United Nations is extremely concerned, as some 40,000 people are reported to have been displaced from the city toward suburban neighborhoods and nearby villages, the spokesman said.

In addition, more than 25,000 people have been displaced from Hasakeh to cities and villages north of the city since Aug. 18, following clashes between government and Kurdish forces, he noted.

"Given the scale and pace of displacement, not all needs can be met yet and the UN urges all parties, and those with influence over them, to facilitate permanent and unhindered access by all humanitarian actors to people in need," he added.
