A Moroccan peacekeeper has been found dead after a convoy of UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) was attacked by armed men, said a UN spokesperson on Thursday.
On Monday, suspected anti-Balaka armed men ambushed the convoy on the Rafai-Bangassou axis in the southeast of the Central African Republic. Four Cambodian peacekeepers were killed and ten other peacekeepers were injured.
UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix will leave for the capital Bangui to attend the memorial ceremony for the five killed peacekeepers scheduled for Friday, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a daily briefing.
UN Security Council has condemned the attack in the strongest terms, noting that attacks against peacekeepers may constitute war crimes.
Despite significant progress and successful elections, the Central African Republic still suffers instability and sporadic unrest.
Clashes between the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition and anti-Balaka militia, mostly Christian, plunged the country of 4.5 million people into civil conflict in 2013.
