Russia has started to help deliver humanitarian aid provided by other countries to quake-hit Haiti, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on Monday.
Two Il-76 cargo planes flew to Caracas to pick up 80 tons of food provided by Venezuela and then flew to Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti, the ministry said. Britain, Peru, Sweden, Panama, Cuba and countries from the Commonwealth of Independent States have made similar requests, it added.
Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu earlier said three Russian planes would stay in Haiti to deliver relief supplies to the disaster area.
Over the weekend, more than 100 quake victims were treated for injuries by Russian doctors who arrived in the impoverished Caribbean nation aboard one of the first Russian aid planes, said the ministry. About 80 people received psychological counseling.
