A spokesperson for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Tuesday that one fifth of the funds requested for Haiti have been received.
OCHA spokesperson Elisabeth Byers said that 108 million U.S. dollars, or 19 percent of its 575-million-dollar appeal, has been received. Another 49 million dollars has been pledged.
"It's going in the right direction," Byers said at a press briefing in Geneva.
On Sunday, the Haitian government declared a countrywide state of emergency and mourning to last 30 days, until Feb. 17. Since Haiti's earthquake last Tuesday, more than 90 trapped people in Port-au-Prince have been rescued, though an estimated 50,000 have died.
