Casualties of Chinese nationals still unknown in Japan following great quake

The Chinese embassy has not received any casualty report of Chinese nationals following Friday 's colossal earthquake, said a Chinese diplomat on Monday.

Addressing a press briefing at the embassy, Press Counselor Deng Wei said that the Chinese embassy has sent three working groups to the quake-hit areas and they are still collecting information concerning Chinese nationals there.

The safety of up to 8,446 Chinese has been confirmed in Japan's quake-hit areas, said Deng.

The Chinese government has decided to provide Japan with 30 million yuan (4.57 million U.S. dollars) worth of emergency humanitarian assistance, including blankets, tents and emergency lights, he said. And the first batch of the relief materials will arrive in Japan Monday.

On Sunday, Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua handed over 45.7 million yen in donations for the victims of the quake, he added.
