Russia supports the decision to send former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as a special envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League (Al) to the crisis-torn Syria, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.
"We expect the work of this respectable politician would facilitate solutions to the acute political and humanitarian problems in Syria," ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement.
He stressed that the solutions should be worked out on the basis of works with all sides in the interest of a peaceful settlement through comprehensive political dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition.
Moscow is ready to work together with Annan in search of generally-acceptable solutions to the problems, Lukashevich said.
In a statement released Thursday, the United Nations and the AL said Annan will "provide good offices aimed at bringing an end to all violence and human rights violations, and promoting a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis."
