Tunisian Foreign Minister Othman Jerandi said Friday that his country "is against any foreign military intervention in Syria" where a chemical weapon attack had allegedly occurred.

Speaking at a meeting on Syria, Jerandi said that Tunisia's position on Syria was founded on the principle of the rejection to foreign interference in an independent country.

He stressed the need to set up peaceful mechanisms to find a " rapid and efficient solution" to the 29-month-old Syrian crisis.

On a related note, several protesters torched a U.S. flag in front of the Municipal Theatre in downtown Tunis on Friday afternoon, local radio reported.

Their demonstration started as a peaceful march but later became a manifestation against the United States, which is considered to be spearheading a possible Western strike on Syria.

The protesters waved Tunisian and Syrian flags and chanted slogans against any foreign military intervention in Syria. A number of political figures took part in the protest.
