Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, unveiled on Sunday a commemorative stamp sheet dedicated to the handicapped population in China.
The set of stamps was jointly issued by China and the United Nations (UN), and Peng was joined by Yoo Soon-taek, wife of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, at the unveiling ceremony.
It is of great significance that China and the UN jointly issue this stamp sheet on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the UN, which showcases the great emphasis both sides have placed on the welfare of the disabled people, Peng said addressing the ceremony.
She noted that both the Chinese government and the society care a lot about the disabled people, and have achieved remarkable success in promoting their welfare.
"It is a responsibility of the entire society to guarantee equality, respect and care for every handicapped person, and we need to work together to help them realize their dreams and lead a decent, colorful and successful life," she added.
Official statistics show that there are over 85 million people in China with various disabilities.
Peng is in town accompanying her husband who has come to attend a series of activities at the UN headquarters in New York after concluding his first state visit to the United States.
