The presence of a dozen celebrity couples was one of the highlights of the evening. They included Li Jing, Li Yong, Dee Hsu, Yang Lan, actor Wang Xuebing, Christy Chung, director Zhao Baogang and singer Na Ying. But the couple who organized the event, actor Li Yapeng and pop queen Faye Wong, stole the show when they showed up together.

It was a glittering night of beautiful evening dresses, smart tuxedos and star performances. The stunning lineup of hosts included Taiwan's Dee Hsu and Chien-Chou Chen.

The event raised 29.6 million yuan (US$4.3 million) for 20 charities. In addition to this amount, 50-million-yuan worth of goods were donated by a hospital. The proceeds will be used to build up a children's hospital that treats children born with cleft lips and palates.

The gala reached its climax when guests bid on a Wedgwood vase that had been painted by the organizing couple's daughters, Li Yan and Dou Jingtong. The vase went to the highest bidder, Katie Chen, agent and longtime friend of Faye Wong, for three million yuan.

Li Yapeng and Faye Wong started the Smile Angel Fund in 2006. The charity was inspired by their daughter, Li Yan, and has become increasingly popular in recent years.
