The world premiere of Bob Dylan's latest exhibition of paintings opened Thursday at Denmark's National Gallery.

Known as the Brazil Series, the collection consists of 40 acrylic paintings and eight drawings, and was created exclusively for the National Gallery of Denmark.

The works, conveying Dylan's fascination with Brazil's cultural diversity, depict various aspects of the South American country's society, including carnivals, rainforests, gangsters and nightlife.

"The Brazil Series is a precise concept: condensed stories of everyday life in Brazil, from the bar, the night club, and the cemetery, to landscapes, gypsies and favelas," said Karsten Ohrt, director of the National Gallery.

Dylan wrote in a message posted at the exhibition: "I chose Brazil as a subject because I have been there many time and I like the atmosphere." The famous U.S. musician has been painting since 1968.

The National Gallery's chief curator, Kasper Monrad, said he believed Dylan chose Brazil also because "these subjects are new to him, and new to us."

"He has added a narrative to the paintings: he not just observes, he tells stories," Monrad said, "When you see the pictures, you have an impression of a before and an after."

Dylan was not present at the premiere, and it is unknown whether he will visit the exhibition, which will last till February next year. Sources at the National Gallery said he was likely to arrive unannounced.

Born in 1941 in Minnesota, the United States, Dylan has released more than 40 records since 1961.
