Chinese pop singer Sun Nan denied drug accusations at a brief press conference on April 24, responding to internet rumors claiming he used and hid drugs.
Speaking to the press, Sun categorically denied the rumors and declared his innocence. He said every citizen has an obligation to support police efforts to bring drug dealers to justice. But members of the public should ignore baseless claims that "most entertainers in Beijing use and trade drugs," he said, promising to file lawsuits against those who libel him.
"Last week some media outlets used my old photos to hint I'm a drug dealer," Sun said, "I don't know where they got the news and what proof they have. I will chase them down because they made the horrible accusations without any evidence. They should be held responsible for their accusations in the court of law. We plan to get the facts and will sue the libelers."
Sun Nan recently snubbed by award show after being asked not to attend the ceremony. Organizers feared his attendance would have a negative impact.
"They asked me not to come." Sun said. "What they did equals recognition of the rumors that were already clarified by mainstream media. I was very disappointed that they decided to damage my reputation, so I decided to give up the award."
Sun Nan also asked singers involved in rumors to unite and fight against rumor-makers according to laws.
The claims surfaced in the wake of arrests in Beijing of Taiwan actor Coco Sun Hsing and Hong Kong actor Max Mok Siu-Chung for drug abuse on April 15. Rumor has it this recent spate of illegal drug use involves a network of more than 30 celebrities "masterminded" by mainland pop singer Sun Nan. Some rumors went further saying Sun Nan has been "arrested."
The blogger who first published the story told the West China Metropolitan News he would like to publicly apologize to Sun Nan. The man refused to reveal his real name and said he was just an amateur, not a professional journalist. He said he just used other media reports and photo of a silhouette which was assumed to be Sun Nan.
"I just did my own analysis," the blogger said. "I didn't actually say Sun is a drug dealer, and I did not intentionally smeared Sun."
