The music and art extravaganza 2011 Beijing Modern Music Festival (BMMF) will be held from May 21 to 27 in the capital.

Co-hosted by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and the Central Conservatory of Music, this year's festival will feature 17 exquisite performances, including five symphonic concerts, 10 chamber concerts, an opera and a choral concert.

Audiences will enjoy a wide range of musical genres by world-renowned artists from the United States, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Myanmar.

The 2011 BMMF also includes the Young Composer Project (YCP), Young China, China's International Forum on Culture, Fine Arts and Human Development and master lectures.

The nine-year-old festival has become one of the most influential cultural events in China, aiming to popularize modern music, facilitate cultural communication between China and the world, and provide a fine platform for young musicians.

Later this year, the BFFM will present a special themed large-scale symphonic oratorio entitled "Light of the Himalayas" on November 18 at the National Centre for the Performing Arts to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the peaceful liberation of Tibet.
