Katy Perry has walked away from the 28th MTV Video Music Awards ceremony held at Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles Sunday night in a victorious manner, winning three top awards including video of the year for "Firework."

Perry, 26, also garnered the trophy for best collaboration and best special effects for her single "E.T.," featuring rapper Kanye West. She has led the nomination with nine nods.

"Now this is a time you want to interrupt me right, Kanye?" Perry quipped to West in accepting the collaboration award, referring to his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift in a presentation held in 2009.

The award event was kicked off with a performance by Lady Gaga, who costumed as her Alter Ego, Jo Calderone, ripping out "You and I" with guitarist Brian May. The singer walked away with two Moonmen statuettes, one for non-televised award for best video with a message, and the other for best female video. Both trophies were presented in honor of "Born This Way."

"I'm so happy to accept the award tonight because Gaga's not here," Lady Gaga said in the role of her male character Calderone.

Adele, who has trailed Perry with seven nominations before the Sunday event, won four less important awards in best direction, editing, art direction and cinematography for "Rolling in the Deep." The Moonmen were handed out before the live event was ever begin.

Foo Fighters was honored with best rock video for "Walk." Canadian teen pop sensation Justin Bieber won best male video for his single "U Smile."

R&B superstar Beyonce Knowles, honored with best choreography for "Run the World (Girls)," dropped her mic, unbuttoned her coat, and rubbed her belly after her performance at the stage, revealing that she is pregnant with her first child.

A tribute to Amy Winehouse, who died last month, was featured during the event, which was introduced by Russell Brand.
