Leading Chinese director Zhang Yimou has been named the winner of the 2011 FIAPF Award for Outstanding Achievement in Film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The award celebrates prominent filmmaking careers in the Asia-Pacific region. Zhang will accept the honor at the 5th Asia Pacific Screen Awards ceremony which is scheduled to take place on November 24, on Australia's Gold Coast.
In an announcement declaring Zhang as this year's recipient of the award, the FIAPF Website describes the director as "one of the world's most acclaimed filmmakers, whose films have opened the eyes of the world to the wonders of Chinese cinema."
Zhang became known to the world when his directorial debut, "Red Sorghum", claimed the top honor at the 1988 Berlin International Film Festival. He also won the main prize at the Venice Film Festival twice, for "The Story of Qiu Ju" and "Not One Less".
Zhang's latest film, "The Flowers of War", starring Christian Bale as an American priest working in China during World War Two, has been shortlisted in the Best Foreign-Language Film category at the 2012 Oscars. The film will open in North American cinemas around Christmas.
