Taylor Swift and Adele won three awards each at the 39th annual American Music Awards presented at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles Sunday night.

Swift's album "Speak Now" was honored with favorite album, which has also been rated as the top-selling album of the year.
Adele, a British pop singer who entered the night with a leading four nominations, beat out Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and other artists to grab favorite female artist and favorite album in Pop or Rock Music, and favorite artist in adult contemporary music. She won the honors mainly for her work on the hit album "Rolling in the Deep" .
The event was also dominated by other top-selling singers including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Beyonce and Jennifer Lopez.
Nicki Minaj picked up two awards including favorite rap/hip-hop artist, winning over Lil Wayne and Kanye West. The rapper opened the show with a performance of her hit song "SuperBass."
Katy Perry was honored with an achievement award, as she was the first female artist to have five No. 1 hits from a single album "Teenage Dream." The singer, after performing her new hit single "The One That Got Away" was surprised with the honor.
Justin Bieber, the Canadian teenager who was the big winner last year, left empty-handed, losing favorite pop/rock male artist to Bruno Mars. However, Bieber walked onstage, singing his holiday song "Under the Mistletoe" and closing the event with the group LMFAO when they sang "Party Rock Anthem."
A constellation of artists including Chris Brown, Daughtry, Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, performed during the annual awards show. Many fans in the audience chimed in.
Jennifer Lopez garnered the award for favorite Latin music artist, besting Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull. The singer, along with Kelly Clarkson and other famous artists, performed onstage for the annual occasion. Lopez performed twice during the event.
The American Music Awards is one of the major U.S. music honors. Award winners, who are chosen by fans on the internet, compete in pop or rock, rap or hip-hop, country and R&B and other musical categories.
