Two of the biggest pop music stars today in U.S., Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, both released their new singles last week, starting a battle for top sales.
According to USA Today, Katy Perry’s new single “Roar” from her upcoming Prism album was sold 557,000 downloads in its first week, topping the digital song chart and scoring the highest sales week of the year.
This new single also marks the best digital song sales week of her career, which has surpassed her famous single “Firework” in 2010 with 509,000 downloads.
Even singer and songwriter John Mayer, Perry’s boyfriend, raved about “Roar,” saying it was a great addition to her musical career.
Compared with Katy Perry, Lady Gaga’s new single “Applause” was under a dimmer spotlight.
This single was released on the same day as Perry’s top single. According to Los Vegas Guardian, Lady Gaga came in at third with only 218,000 downloads for her opening week.
Perry's Prism, arrives on Oct. 22; and Gaga's ARTPOP is due Nov. 11. The two will bookend Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards show, with Gaga opening and Perry closing.
