Pop star Laure Shang has held a concert and released a new charity single to support poor children in remote regions of China.

"I joined the campaign by chance," Shang told China.org.cn, "But I have always wanted to help and find a project to spread the power and value of music."

She also mentioned that she admires Michael Jackson, not just for his talent and music but also for the love and sense of social responsibility that he showed.

"Only a good man with love in his heart could write songs that are so beautiful," she said.

Laure Shang sang her new single "The Star" live at the Beijing Century Theatre in front of an audience of several hundred, among whom were company representatives from Top Resource Conservation Engineering Co. Ltd, BAZAAR magazine and the Enlight Media Group who are willing to help poor children and their families.

The single is a theme song for the "The Right to Light" campaign, which was initiated by the China Environmental Protection Foundation (CEPF). Shang said that the song was based on a Chinese children's song with the same title.

The campaign has received more than 2 million yuan (US$326,700) in donations since it was launched in June. "The foundation sent 10,000 solar powered lamps to Kekexili on the Tibetan plateau, to give to children, herders and families," said Li Wei, deputy secretary general of CEPF.

"The faint lights may mean nothing to the people who live in the city, but they are very important in the remote areas," Li added.

The children will not have to walk in the dark to school. They will have light to study in the evening. The campaign is not just about lighting up their life, but also to give the people a better future."

The campaign aims to help people in areas which are still without power, remote and mountainous areas where children have to walk a long way to schools before dawn and where the people suffering from power cuts following natural disasters such as earthquakes.

As the campaign's ambassador, Laure Shang also traveled to Kekexili to talk to local people and kids. Famous Belgian musician Jean-François Maljean helped her produce the new charity single and joined her on stage for several songs.

Laure Shang, whose Chinese name is Shang Wenjie, is the champion of the third (2006) season of the Chinese singing contest Super Girl, which launched her music career. In 2011, she also won Best Female Singer at the annual MusicRadio China TOP Charts Awards.
