American rock group OneRepublic will make its debut in Shanghai at Shanghai Grand Stage on the night of November 2.

They are best known for the smash hit “Apologize,” which ranks in the top 50 on the Billboard Hot 100’s All-Time Top Songs list and led to a remix featured on Timbaland’s album “Shock Value.”

Some call their music pop rock, power pop or alternative rock, but in some ways they defy being pigeonholed into a genre.

OneRepublic released their third studio album, “Native,” in March this year, with its song “Counting Starts” topping the UK Singles Chart this month.

“It’s my first time in China, I’m super excited. We’ve been waiting for a long time for this,” says Ryan Tedder, frontman of OneRepublic, through an e-mail interview.

“Everything is brand new to us. In Asia, we have more than 300 million fans. They scream in a way that we never see elsewhere. The Asian market, especially China, is very important to us. I hope fans in Shanghai will be as passionate as those elsewhere,” he adds.

The “Native” concert, sharing the name of their third album, is a celebration of the group’s 10th anniversary.

Bassist Brent Kutzle came up with the idea of calling the album “Native,” which came from the observation of how different each member of the group is from each other, and that each one of the band members is like a different animal.

In creating their third full-length album, OneRepublic traveled to Paris, Greece, London, New York, Seattle and Vancouver to write, record and immerse themselves in elevating and expanding their sweeping sound.

This time in Shanghai, they will perform songs from the album.

Formed in 2003 by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins in Colorado, OneRepublic first achieved success on the Internet.

“We’re no respecter of genre. If it’s a good song or a good artist, whether rock, pop, indie or hip-hop, they’ve probably influenced us on some level ... Nothing’s new under the sun. We’re a sum of a bunch of parts,” Tedder says, describing OneRepublic’s varied style of music.

The band members often receive greetings from Chinese fans on their personal websites. The passion of Chinese fans “is one of the major reasons why we are coming to Shanghai.”

“We will fully engage in the Shanghai tour, bringing the same experience all fans worldwide can enjoy. I hope everyone will enjoy the music with ear and soul,” Tedder says. “For 10 years, we’ve been seeking to be special. We love rock because it inspires our emotions. The fusion of the cello brings more passion. The concert will feature a live mix of the cello and rock. It’s one of the biggest highlights at the concert.”

The rock group’s popularity is also shown in the frequent use of its music in American TV series such as “Gossip Girl” and “The Vampire Diaries.”

“It’s a mutual benefit. Our fans can enjoy the TV series, while the TV series allow more people to like our music,” Teddy says. “Our tickets sold well in Beijing and Shanghai. It could be partly the reason.”

After the tour, the members will probably take vacations and store up energy for their next album and tour.

“We hope to bring enlightenment to our fans in addition to our music,” Tedder says. “Influencing people, I believe, is a common goal for artists. I hope fans can listen to our music with heart.”
