Film "Thor: The Dark World" dominated the North American box office over the weekend with 86 million U.S. dollars, leaving other competitors far behind.

The 3D sequel by Marvel Studios and Disney reaped the fourth-highest opening weekend of 2013 to date, but lagged well behind another Marvel film, "Iron Man 3," whose 174-million-dollar debut is still the biggest of 2013.

"The Dark World" stars 30-year-old Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the god of thunder, who teams up with his deceitful brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, to defeat an evil foe.

The 86-million-dollar sum marked a 31-percent increase on the first installment's 65.7 million dollars.

Those who saw the new movie this weekend assigned it an average grade of A-, according to CinemaScore, a market research firm, compared to the B+ for the first "Thor."

Miles behind "Thor," there was a very tight race for the second place between Paramount's "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa," Relativity's "Free Birds" and CBS Films' "Last Vegas."

"Bad Grandpa" currently held the second place with an estimated 11.3 million dollars, while "Free Birds" and "Last Vegas" followed closely with 11.2 million dollars and 11.1 million dollars respectively.

Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend, as estimated by studios, were "Ender's Game" (10.3 million dollars), "Gravity" (8.4 million), "12 Years a Slave" (6.6 million), "Captain Phillips" (5.8 million), "About Time" (5.1 million) and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" (2.8 million).
