This year's China Shanghai International Children's Book Fair will feature a dedicated area for the public, its organizers said yesterday.

Though launched just last year as an industry event, when the doors were opened to one and all on the final day, the response was overwhelming, said Kan Ninghui, deputy director of the Shanghai Press and Publication Administration.

"All of the books sold out within 3 hours," he said.

It made sense, therefore, to give more people the opportunity to come to the event this year, he said.

"Most Shanghai parents are keen for their children to learn English, so demand is high for bilingual and original foreign-language books," Kan said.

This year's fair, which runs from November 20 to 22 at the Shanghai World Expo and Convention Center, will be attended by 250 publishers from around the world, he said.

They will offer a choice of more than 50,000 titles, of which about 20,000 will be foreign-language, he said.

As well as the reading matter, a host of famous writers and illustrators will be at the show, including Brazilian illustrator Roger Mello, Finnish writer Aino Havukainen and Belgian cartoonist Pierre Bailly.

Tickets for the event cost 25 yuan (US$4.09) for one adult and two children under 1.2 meters tall, while a three-day pass costs 50 yuan.
