Opening last Wednesday on the mainland, director Christopher Nolan's space epic has grossed 42 million U.S. dollars in China over the past five days.

The film has earned Nolan his biggest mainland bow. "Interstellar"'s China showing also helped the film blast off to the top spot in the global box office.

Internationally, the film has earned 224 million U.S. dollars.

However, stateside, it couldn't break the atmosphere against the long-awaited comedy sequel, "Dumb and Dumber To."

The sequel to the 1994 hit movie, "Dumber To" managed to outdo both "Interstellar" and last week's U.S. box office topper, "Big Hero 6", earning 38 million dollars over its opening weekend.

The film sees actors Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as the dimwitted duo of Harry and Lloyed for another misadventure.
