After only nine weeks on sale, the singer's album stole the title away from Disney's Frozen soundtrack at the very last minute.
According to Neilsen Music, 1989 sold over 3.6 million copies while the Frozen soundtrack moved 3.5 million.
In the final week of the year, 1989 sold over 300-thousand copies while Frozen sold 64,000.
This is the second time Swift has had the top selling album of the calendar year.
She did this previously back in 2009 with her second album Fearless.
