Stephen Chow has been working on a new science fiction movie project called "Mermaid" – starring Deng Chao, Show Luo, and Kitty Zhang – since he made Chinese history with "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons" in 2013, the second-highest-grossing Chinese film ever with 1.25 billion yuan (US$205 million) in revenues.
Another movie that takes a cut of the re-release pie is the 3D makeover of "The Grandmaster" by Wong Kar-Wai. The film, which had a different cut of stories, was re-released on Jan. 8, 2015. It has just grossed 30 million yuan (US$4.8 million) in four days, and it is a hot topic in movie fan circles despite its moderate performance.
"Kung Fu Hustle 3D" will be re-released in Chinese theaters on Jan. 15, 2015, but how far it will go remains to be seen.
