The casting of Lu Han increased the hype for the film, as the director wanted. Chen said in an interview that he wanted Lu Han so much and yelled "what is the point of us collaborating with a South Korean studio if they can’t even get me one South Korean actor when I need one?" to the CJ Entertainment representatives when the studio said they were informed by the EXO's management that they did not intend to get involved with the movie.
The director said inviting Lu Han to act in the film was a gamble, but the result turned out well. Lu, who plays the young lead singer in a small band and the family's grandson, accomplishes his mission to get his first screen appearance with a vivid personality and there's an extra for fans: he sang a very touching theme song for the movie.
Many parts of the film are based of nostalgia, smartly adding the popular Chinese elements of the present and of the past to the production, including the retrospective photo studio, and the elderly women's most beloved activities - square dancing and mahjong, the phenomenal TV hit "My Fair Princess" (1998) and classic songs from Teresa Teng, the late Chinese pop icon from the 1960s - 1990s. The localized Chinese elements in the film allow people to resonate more with it than with the South Korean version.
"Miss Granny" is not just a romantic, funny and delightful experience, but also a thought-provoking fairy tale for older people. It is about regret, bravery, lost youth and dreams, making compromises and repairing family relationships.
The end of the film makes people burst into tears when the leading actors make confessions of love. It draws back many intimate memories, creates an emotional vibe and questions about how old people should be treated. A movie is just like a dream, but it also provides a chance for people to reflect on themselves and examine issues in reality.
