On Saturday, "Monster Hunt," "Jian Bing Man," "Monkey King: Hero Is Back" and other Chinese-made films showing in the Chinese market brought in a stunning haul of 435 million yuan (US$70.07 million) to reach the biggest single day ticket sales total of all time. The three phenomenal blockbusters accounted for about 90 percent of total ticket sales.
Box office sales also raised the single day record for Chinese market total sales beyond the 400-million-yuan mark. The previous record was set on April 12, 2015, when Hollywood blockbuster "Furious 7" debuted and all the films showing in China made a combined 387 million yuan (US$62.34 million) in total (excluding the midnight showings of "Furious 7") in a single day.
On Sunday, the world's second largest market still managed to earn 403 million yuan (US$64.8 million) in total. This time, historic records were made without the participation of Hollywood blockbusters.
"Monster Hunt," a fantasy comedy by "Shrek the Third" director Raman Hui, raked in 173 million yuan (US$27.7 million) on its opening day, breaking the opening day and single day ticket sales records for a Chinese-made movie. The film grossed 669 million (US$107.7 million) last weekend, setting a new record for the biggest opening weekend in China.
