In the hot days of summer, Hollywood movies are largely absent from the Chinese market, as there is an unspoken secret of a protected month for Chinese-made movies. Only one foreign animated film, "Shaun the Sheep Movie," was screened alongside Chinese blockbusters last weekend, and it has made only 26.4 million yuan (US$4.25 million) thus far. Another foreign film from 2014, "The Imitation Game," will hit the Chinese market on July 21, but it is unlikely to make any impact.

The three Chinese blockbusters have already helped Chinese-made films' box office gross surpass imported foreign films' total gross in the Chinese market.

Surprisingly, this month's three domestic blockbusters all received rave reviews, sweeping away complaints about the protected month and the low quality of Chinese films that appeared during this month in previous years.

"I went to nearby theaters to watch films this weekend," recounted Rao Shuguang, general secretary of the China Film Association. "People filled the theaters and laughter rang out from time to time. In my memory, such a situation only occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. Of course, it is a surprise for me to see the rise of the Chinese film industry."

The Chinese film industry is in high spirits at the moment. After learning that new records were made over the weekend, China Film Bureau chief Zhang Hongsen said, "Hail to all the film audiences of the nation! The Chinese film industry should work harder not to let audiences down."
