An age for Internet celebrity
Internet celebrity, or "net red" in literal Chinese, is a newly-coined word to indicate those who get famous online for a certain event or behavior due to the magnifying effect of the TV and social media, creating productive popularity.
"Net red" ranked ninth in the "10 most popular terms in 2015" listed by Yaowenjiaozi, or verbalism in English, a famous Chinese cultural magazine.
There are also people who hype themselves to be well-known on social media, and being a "net red" is now considered a must for anyone who would like to be a high-class prostitute.
Chinese Internet celebrities like Luo Yufeng, Guo Meimei, Pang Mailang who either meet net users' needs for seeking beauty, ugliness, entertainment or thrill are mostly a passing fad that can only capture people's attention for a brief moment.
Teenage groups like "Sunshine" and "Love-wings" may just repeat their predecessors as their "followers" gradually lose interest.
