A new reality TV show Chinese Bands will see veteran music industry figures help undiscovered local bands create original Chinese-style songs.
Godfather of Chinese rock Cui Jian, pop singer Tan Weiwei and music producer Chen Weilun will star in the show, traveling the country to uncover new talents.
Cui praised the TV program for bringing rock and roll back to the stage.
"Good bands and musicians need a stage to let more people hear their works. I hope they could shine with their real talents," Cui said.
Cui's new release will also be displayed in the show. He said he will try his best to prepare despite of the limited time.
Tan recalled her excitement at being invited to join the show. She said it was a satisfying experience to create new works with excellent folk musicians and singers. As a young singer, she also wanted to learn more from others via the show.
As globalization has taken off, traditional Chinese music is strongly influenced by Western music genres, such as blues, jazz and rock and roll. Thus, creating Chinese-style music is easier said than done.
Chen said the new works needed to be based on a correct understanding of Chinese music's unique identity.
The show, more like a documentary, has no auditions nor competitions. It will mainly focus on looking for good bands and original works. It is scheduled to launch on Jiangsu TV in May.
