Chinese businessman Wang Jianlin, also owner of Dalian Wanda Group Co. Ltd, one of China's largest commercial property companies and cinema chain operators, recently ranked as the 18th wealthiest person in the world with a fortune of US$28.7 billion.
This is the first time that Wang has ascended to the top-20 club on the global fortune list of Forbes, the U.S. business magazine.
Wang has also overtaken Li Ka-shing as the richest business person of Chinese origin anywhere in the world. Li was the eighth wealthiest businessman in Forbes' 2013 ranking.
Against the depreciated values of many tycoons' fortunes and the sagging performance of China's stock markets, Wang maintained the growth of his fortune by US$4.5 billion this year.
Jack Ma, the online business magnate, followed Wang as the 33rd wealthiest person in the world with a fortune totaling US$20.5 billion.
The global fortune list issued by Forbes saw 10 wealthy businesspersons from emerging economies rise to the top 20 list across the world in 2008. However, this year the number was reduced to four.
