Talented Sun Jiankun's poor result in gaokao, national college entrance examination means he has missed out on a chance to study at the highly regarded Fudan University in Shanghai, which had recognized his rare ability and even supported his application with a strong letter of endorsement.

His gaokao score was six points below that required for entry into first tier universities, as set by the Xi'an-based admission office in Shaanxi, which has refused to be flexible and make an exception for his widely recognized talent.

To make matters worse, Sun, who achieved wide recognition through a televised talent competition and has public sympathy on his side, is now facing accusations of plagiarism. Fang Shimin, a famous media critic who uses Fang Zhouzi as his pen name, strongly criticized Sun in his recent microblog, saying he had read Sun's work and discovered it was copied. The comments have stirred up a media storm.

Sun claims to have read between 2,000 traditional Chinese classic books between age 8 and 18, or 200 books on average a year. Fang mocked this, saying it would mean Sun had read more than even Chen Yinque, one of the most famous scholars in modern China.

According to Fang, Sun's written work titled Remembering the Founding Father of the Republic of China - Sun Yat-sen was largely copied from The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Song written by Qin Xiaoyi, once vice deputy general secretary of Kuomintang.

"Sun has no outstanding talent for traditional Chinese studies and even lacks morality," Fang said on his blog. He also expressed disappointment at the behavior of the Fudan University professors.

Fang's view was that the admission office did the right thing by not giving a cheat the chance to become "a master in traditional Chinese studies."

The Global Times tried contacting Sun on his mobile telephone and through email to get his response to Fang's comments, but received no response by Tuesday.
